Statement: Lowell Admissions Change Ignores Voice from Chinese Community
We regret that CPAC-SF did not have a seat in the SFUSD High School Taskforce (HSTF). Therefore, Chinese parents’ voices, representing the parents of the largest student body in the district, are ignored. Instead of developing more high quality schools like Lowell High School, SFUSD will take down Lowell’s 3-band merit-and-equity-based admission policy and remove the California Smarter Balance Standardized Testing, replacing it with a mere 3.0 GPA for entrance. This is the opposite of our community demand and will jeopardize the pipeline for future SFUSD enrollment. SFUSD students deserve better education and academic opportunities, we need more academically focused public high schools like Lowell to support talented, gifted and driven students. We hope more high schools offer better programs and resources like Lowell. Change of the Lowell Admissions Policy will deprive families of what they seek and push more families to leave the district. Lowell has thrived in educating students for over 160 years with merit based admissions, as a star high school in California. We are so proud of it as San Franciscans. After one year of the lottery admission policy, 1/4 of freshmen students received D and F grades, it is a triple number of the previous school year. Lowering Lowell’s admission standards will eliminate the only school in SFUSD that holistically serves academically driven students. On the other hand, the proposed admissions change will risk the graduation rate for students who are not ready. We urge Superintendent Wayne to listen to our families’ concerns and needs, and to maintain Lowell’s traditional merit-equity-based admissions policy.
